Chef Ben Lanyon ran kitchens in stunning locations around Australia – from islands off the north Queensland coast and the historic North Gregory Hotel in Winton – where incidentally the first public performance of Waltzing Matilda was made in 1895 – to lodge resorts on Kangaroo Island and Cradle Mountain, in Tasmania. But the lure of wife Lou’s hometown of Stanthorpe kept calling and the couple made the move there in 2016 to open their own bistro.

Ben works with small producers and artisans from around the region and runs a weekly changing menu that brilliantly showcases the seasonal harvest of the Granite Belt.

A garden and orchard out the back supplements the sourced produce and even provides honey for the menu. The restaurant, which gave new life to a building that’s been a general store and a butcher shop in its past, seats just 35 – so it pays to book in advance.
