Follow shady tree-lined roads right to the top of the Bunya Mountains where natural wonders – and incidentally Australia’s highest whisky bar – can be found. Visitors flock here for breathtaking walks and native flora and fauna in old and diverse forest.

Birdwatchers will find well over 100 species here and overseas visitors in particular are charmed by the friendly wallabies that come out in great numbers to graze at dawn and dusk.

For those who prefer a little retail therapy, there’s a colourful market on the last Sunday of every month offering up art and produce and much more.

The Bunya Mountains, which can claim the largest stand of Bunya trees anyway, are a sacred site for the local indigenous people. At night, those big high country skies dazzle afresh as a glittering reminder you are far from the city limits.
